Munk studio was founded by Hans Peter Munk in 2011.
A clear vision of creating furniture that is merges into everyday use whilst drawing you in by clear architectural lines and a means to express personalities through interior with one of kind, functional designs. With a Scandinavian approach to quality and handcraft the objects are made to stand out, yet blend in with their surroundings.
With materials and handcraft in focus, both the usage of traditional materials such as steel and wood are recurring in the objects, but a curiosity is forever present constantly exploring new materials. The latest limited objects ‘No.160’ have a playful approach incorporating plexi glass, resin and is based around materials that reflect light, rather than absorb it. The pieces are characterised by an ever-changing environment, something that does not stand still but is in constant movement.
The approach is based around furniture and objects that have a purpose, where identity and culture becomes a part of each piece. There needs to be a perfect balance between the simplicity and objects that do not interfere but become the setting itself. The functionality and potential evolvement of the pieces such as the modular Climb chairs using the swiss knife as inspiration as hooks that hold the different elements together for something that can be used singular or plural. Design is about experimenting and pushing boundaries into something that hits functionality and amazement as the end result.
The Story:
With a background in interior and furniture design, Hans Peter Munk opened the design and furniture concept store in Copenhagen, MUNK – WAY TO LIVE. The store received the Danish Designbaseprize in 2014, awarded for the most innovative and forward thinking retail store in the interior category, followed by a nomination for the GIA Award in the US.
With a curated selection of upcoming and established designers, combined with MUNK in-house furniture designs, the store evolved into what became known as the MUNK COLLECTIVE. MUNK COLLECTIVE was known as a strong design house, where a line of designers, both new graduates, but also established names created functional and forward-thinking objects for everyday use. The Collective embraced new designers, and created a platform based around the fundamental idea that the industry needs new designs, and not only reproductions of classics. After 4 years of working with the Collective, Hans Peter turned his head back to Munk Studio with a need to create his own designs.
Munk studio is a multidisciplinary studio specialising in designing and creating bespoke products and designs for interior and exterior clients.
